MacBook USB ports not working, reading? Try an SMC + PRAM Reset to solve this problem. MacBook USB port not working properly? Or won’t recognize any USB devices? Seems like there is a bunch of people who are having USB ports issues in MacBook Pro or Air. Don’t worry anymore, Here is a way to solve this issue. I have a Macbook Pro 10.5.3 2.16 GHz with 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. The problem that I am having is that neither of the 2 usb ports nor the 400 firewire port is recognizing any of my external hard drives. I recently bought a 320 GB Verbatim Firewire/USB Drive and it is not mounting or showing up in the System Profiler, Disk Utility, or Drive Genius.
USB port lacks power If you have the device plugged into a USB hub or into your keyboard, plug it directly into one of the USB ports on the computer. If it works there, the issue is with the device to which it had been previously connected. The device may need more power than the port provides. Not all USB ports in the computer are working. MacBook Pro not recognizing USB ethernet adapter in macOS, but does in Bootcamp. Thunderbolt 3 to Ethernet adapter. Macbook air: unable to assign static IP on.
You can connect as many as four displays in these configurations:
You can connect multiple LG UltraFine 4K and 5K displays in these configurations:
Your MacBook Pro has two busses for its four Thunderbolt 3 ports. Each pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports (on the left and right sides of your Mac) are different busses. Whenever possible, connect your displays to different busses to maximize performance. Don’t connect more than two displays to either bus. If you connect a 6K, 5K, or multi-cable 4K display, use a different bus for each of the displays.
Hi again, thanks for the links above, not sure what is going on but now, even on the command line I don't see it attached at all. The flash drive does work and I have copied files onto from the PC and still not recognized at all but there is a LED indicator to let me know that it is there and on. When I reattach the USB hub and another thumb drive both are detected and can be read.
The USB ports work for other items, and the drive is not seen by the system at all. here is what I find in the command line query,

Also now when I use the Disk Utility I only see the internal drive and any other USB Drives I attach or detach. I've restarted the pro and still it does get recognized, My concern is, it works everywhere else, what if I reformatted the unit to Apple HFS or redid it in FAT32 would it kill the disk and whatever program is on it to control the lightening connector.
I'll keep looking around the chatrooms and other places for some other takes on this but if you know an engineer or programmer that likes a challenge I've got lots. Thanks again for any suggestions.
